A visit to the island nation of Iceland is always an unforgettable experience. It’s full of beautiful scenery that varies drastically by region, warm locals, and no shortage of once-in-a-lifetime things to do and places to see.
There really is so much to do, so many places you could go, and so many wonders of nature to take in, it can be hard to fit it all in on one go. It’s one of my favorite countries in the world, and after visiting four times, these are my top 7 must-do picks for a trip to Iceland.
1. Snorkel Through Tectonic Plates in Silfra
2. WaterfallsThere are over 200 named waterfalls in Iceland, so it would be next to impossible to see all of them. The three that are a must-see on a first trip to Iceland are seljalandsfoss, skogafoss and gullfoss.
They are magnificent, and you’ll be sure to stand in awe at the power our natural world can possess. Nothing made me feel smaller and more humble than standing at the base of Skogafoss as the deafening noise of the water crashed down, soaking me with it’s mist from a hundred yards away. It’s truly an incredible experience to stand next to something so beautiful and raw.
Thankfully, these three waterfalls are not far off of the general tourist route, so they aren’t difficult to get to. That being said, they can get crowded later in the day, especially Gullfoss. This one is a shorter drive from Reykjavik so it tends to get more visitors who are less comfortable venturing further out into the country and more tour groups being it’s easy to be bused to a few central locations in a structured group. I’d recommend heading to this one early in the morning.
